Spotify Opens Membership To Public, Gives Users 6 Months Unlimited Listening

Music streaming service Spotify has decided to retire its Spotify Open account and give every user 6 months of free, unlimited music listening. The news was first announced when CEO Daniel Ek spoke to Alexia from TechCrunch, but on Monday, Spotify released details of the new type of service.
Previously, Spotify Open was an exclusive version of Spotify Free. The company has decided to merge both the Spotify Free and Spotify Open accounts into one single type of account. From now on, all free users will simply have a Spotify account. After the 6-month period of free listening runs out, users who have not subscribed to Spotify Unlimited or Spotify Premium will be granted 10 hours of listening per month and 5 plays per individual song. Spotify Unlimited and Spotify Premium accounts will remain unchanged.
This news comes directly after Facebook announced partnerships with a number of music streaming services including Spotify at the f8 conference last Thursday. After rumors of a new music platform swirled, an idea the social network eventually canned, about a dozen music services have been integrated into Facebook’s new Open Graph – but Spotify integration comes at a price, at least for the users who expected to use the service as a stand alone app.
Spotify is now requiring all users to have a Facebook account. When you visit Spotify’s open sign up, you’ll be directed to a page that has pulled all of your Facebook information, if you’re logged in at the time. If not, you will be asked to login or create a Facebook account to gain access to Spotify.
Spotify’s Facebook integration will certainly help the service gain new users, but what about those of us who don’t want our every listen to be posted on our Facebook Walls and Tickers? It’s simple to hide in your preferences (go to Applications > Spotify > App Privacy > Only Me) but it still makes users uneasy. It actually dissuaded me from signing up for the service when my friends started using it post-integration.
Spotify currently has 3 levels of subscription: Spotify (free), Spotify Unlimited ($4.99 per month) and Spotify Premium ($9.99/month).
Will you still subscribe even if you have to link Spotify to your Facebook account?

iPhone 5 Release Date 15th October

iPhone 5 Release Date 15th October When is the iPhone 5 coming out? That’s probably a question many are dying to know the answer to, and so far based on the rumors in the past, we’ve come across dates such as vague as “end of September” to “early October”, and more specific dates such as October 7th and October 21st, but now for those tracking the release of the iPhone 5, October 15th is another date you may want to mark down on your calendars.
France Telecom’s CEO Stéphane Richard has reportedly come out and said:
We can imagine Apple won't be particularly happy about that, but the CEO of Orange might have just spilled the beans on the availability of the iPhone 5. He said that if he believes what he hears, the next iPhone will be out by 15th October on his network.

Earlier today, we also heard an interesting rumor about the availability of the iPhone 5 in the UK. This information, however, comes from O2's customer service center so it's a bit harder to believe. And there's little sense in Apple releasing the smartphone in France, before they bring it to UK, so it's unlikely that both of those are true at the same time.
So, if the iPhone 5 is to come in the middle of next month we should be looking for its announcement event to be scheduled for the end of September. That nicely coincides with the rumor that iOS 5 will be getting its Gold Master release on September 23th.
Yeah, the waiting is killing us too, but at least we know its end is finally nearing.

iPhone 5 Release Date Event in 14 Days Says Apple Rep

Apple typically spans about two and a half weeks from new iPhone announcement to release date, so expect Friday October 21st as the most likely on-sale target. If there’s sufficient initial inventory to allow it, online preorders will begin about a week before that date, but may be cut off quickly if demand proves to be so high that the preorders risk cutting into retail launch day inventory. Then on the 21st (or the night before, if Apple opts for an early morning launch), lines will form at retailers ranging from Apple Stores and carrier stores to electronics stores like Radio Shack and Best Buy, and we’ll soon find out just how much iPhone 5 inventory Apple really has on hand.

Apples iPhone 5 Media Event Scheduled for October 4

While Apple could certainly change its plans anytime, sources said that the October 4 date has been selected by the company to showcase the iPhone 5. Sources added that the plan is now to make the new device available for purchase within a few weeks after the announcement.
The Loop's Jim Dalrymple confirms with a simple "Yep" that October 4th is the date of the event. So Official Release date of iPhone 5 is October 4.

According to the report, new Apple CEO Tim Cook should play a prominent role in the event in order to assert himself as the new leader of the company, although it will almost certainly be a team presentation with other executives such as Phil Schiller, Scott Forstall, and Eddy Cue leading portions of the event. It is unclear whether Steve Jobs will make an appearance at the event, with the report suggesting that a decision on whether or not he appears would be a last-minute one based on his health.

Bank runs started in Europe ?

Siemens has no faith in European banks anymore. Siemens Bank roll on.

In a shocking representation of just how bad things are in Europe, the FT reports that major European industrial concern Siemens, pulled €500 million form a large French bank, which is not BNP and leaves just [SocGen|Credit Agricole] and deposited the money straight to the ECB.

What is it if it's not bank run ?

The implications of this are quite stunning, as it means that even European companies now refuse to work directly with their own banks, and somehow the ECB has become a direct lender/cash holder of only resort to private non-financial institutions!

As Bloomberg reports further on the FT story, in total, Siemens has deposited between 4 billion euros and 6 billion euros, mostly through one-week deposits, with the ECB, FT says, cites the person. It isn’t clear from which bank Siemens withdrew its deposits, per the FT... but it is hardly difficult to figure out.

BNP Paribas isn’t the bank involved, FT reports, cites unidentified person familiar with the bank. This story should be having far more impact on the EURUSD than any rumors about Greece lying it will fire all of its public workers only to make sure Eurobanks can survive one more day.

HootSuite Closes $3M Funding Round, Acquires Twitter Analysis Tool TwapperKeeper

Social media management client HootSuite has closed a $3 million funding round and has acquired TwapperKeeper, a social storage and reporting tool used for Twitter analysis.
HootSuite, which moved to a freemium business model last year, is now a profitable company. In order to accelerate its growth, it has raised $3 million in funding with participation from previous investors Hearst Interactive Media, Blumberg Capital and angel investor Geoff Entress. Millennium Technology Ventures is a new investor in the company as a result of this round.
The financing will allow HootSuite to grow its team, increase advertising efforts, make acquisitions and continue to scale. HootSuite passed 2 million users back in June.
HootSuite has also announced the acquisition of TwapperKeeper, following previous acquisitions of Swift App (which is now HootSuite for Android) and TwitterBar (now HootBar). TwapperKeeper analyzes, archives, tracks and monitors Twitter data. It is being used by company marketing departments, customer service teams, conference leaders and academic organizations. It seems this acquisition was made to help HootSuite improve its Twitter analytics offerings, while perhaps allowing users to archive tweets.
Lastly, HootSuite, which rolled out a wealth of Facebook management tools back in August, has added several new faces to its executive team to join CEO Ryan Holmes, CTO Simon Stanlake and Marketing and Community Director Dave Olson. Steve Johnson will take the lead on HootSuite channels as CRO. Darren Suomi is HootSuite’s new vice president of sales, while Gregory Gunn has been unveiled as vice president of business development.

‘Dirty Dancing’ Facebook Game Brings The Catskills To Your Computer

Get on your dancing shoes and head for the hills. Entertainment company Lionsgate has teamed up with social gaming company Social Game Universe to release a “Dirty Dancing” Facebook game based on the 1987 film of the same name.
“Dirty Dancing” allows you to team up with your Facebook friends and help build Kellerman’s Resort, offer fun activities and dances to the resort’s guests, spread romance and enjoy some music from the “Dirty Dancing” soundtrack. The game has a retro look, designed using pixel art, to give it an extra ’80s vibe.
In the game, you are tasked with running the resort and turning it into a romantic getaway for guests. To do this, you drop so-called “Romance Waves” around the resort to literally spread the love. You are also tasked with improving the resort using the in-game watermelon currency to buy virtual items like tennis courts and jukeboxes.
Of course, you can entertain your guests through dance shows. The more dance shows you put on, the more Romance Waves you will generate. Meanwhile, you can take pictures of your resort so you can store them in a keepsake album and share them with your Facebook friends. Additionally, you can visit your friends’ resorts and send them virtual gifts.

The movie has more than 10.9 million fans on Facebook, making it one of the 10 most-Liked entertainment franchises on the social network. It has the 9th most Likes of any movie on Facebook and has more Likes than any other ’80s movie on Facebook. Lionsgate appears to be tapping into that large user base with the launch of this game.
Curt Marvis, Lionsgate’s president of digital media, said:
We are capitalizing on new platforms to drive additional, incremental revenues for our successful brands — and Dirty Dancing, with its incredibly strong Facebook following, was a natural fit for extension into social gaming. We view this as a clear opportunity to further monetize one of our most popular brands and we will continue to identify and develop innovative brand extensions as we explore the emerging platforms of the digital marketplace.
Before starting to write this article, I took a little time to check out the game. Fairly early on during the tutorial which is designed to show you how the game works, you have to take part in a dance rehearsal which lasts for an hour in real-time, during which time you can’t do anything else. This doesn’t exactly seem like the best way to get people quickly hooked on the game. However, I’m sure it will find an audience among fans of the film.
You can check out the “Dirty Dancing” game for yourself by installing it on Facebook.

Facebook Now Lets You Follow Other Users With ‘Subscribe’ Button

Facebook has unveiled a new way for you to manage what you see in your News Feed through the new Subscribe button. You can use the button to control what types of posts you see from specific friends but the big news here is that you can add another user’s public posts to your News Feed, regardless of whether you are friends with them.
The button will appear on the profiles of your friends and other users. It allows you to do 3 things: control what you see from your friends in your News Feed; add public posts from people you are not friends with to your News Feed; and let others subscribe to your public posts.
First, the button lets you manage how much content you see from your friends. You can choose to see all of their updates; most of their updates (i.e. the updates you normally see from them); or just the most important updates, like when their relationship status changes or they get a new job. You can also select what type of updates you want to see. So, for instance, if you have a friend you mostly play games with on Facebook, you can choose to only see stories about games from them. You may also opt not to see photos from someone who shares too many images in your feed. You can decide whether you see stories on life events, status updates, photos and videos and games for each person. It should be noted that nothing will change in your News Feed unless you want it to. So if you don’t want to change what you are seeing from someone, simply ignore the button.
The second way to use the Subscribe button is to add content from people you are not friends with but still find interesting into your News Feed. For instance, you might want to see posts from your favorite bloggers, celebrities, journalists or artists in your News Feed, which you can do by subscribing to them. As with your friends, you can choose what types of content you want to see and how much you’d like to see from each person you have subscribed to. Facebook will also suggest people for you to subscribe to based on how many of your friends subscribe to that person and how many interests you have in common.

Lastly, people can subscribe to your posts too so you can share your status updates, links, photos, questions and more with more than just your friends. People who are subscribed to you but whom you are not friends with will only see posts you share publicly. If you would like to allow other Facebook users you are not friends with to subscribe to your public posts, you can enable the Subscription button on your profile by clicking “Allow Subscribers” from the Subscriptions Page.
Once you have added the button, you can also decide who can comment on your posts and what notifications you receive from the Subscriptions tab on the left of your homepage. Additionally, you are able to see who has subscribed to you in the tab. If there is someone who you do not want to subscribe to your posts, you can choose to block them from your account. You can manage your subscriptions — for both your friends and others — from the Subscriptions tab.
The launch of the Subscribe button is big for several reasons. One being that there is no limit on the number of subscribers you can have, so you can effectively say goodbye to the 5,000 friend limit if you want to share content with a lot of people (though you can only subscribe to a maximum of 5,000 people). Of course, you could always set up a personal Facebook Page to share content, but many users will simply find it easier to share on their profile rather than having to share content on both their profile and a page. Pages will still exist as they provide an important social marketing platform for brands, companies and products (Facebook has a post on the differences between pages and the Subscribe button) but the Subscribe button effectively allows others to Like your profile and see your personal public posts.
As ever, Facebook suggests that you only add people as friends when you know them personally, but the Subscribe button allows you to find out what individuals are sharing without having to be friends with them. The button will only appear on your profile if you enable it, but you will automatically see the subscribe button on your friends’ profiles (you’re already subscribed to their posts anyway, by virtue of being friends with them) so you can choose what content you want to see from them.
It seems to me that Facebook is trying to shift the way in which people use the social network. By adopting a Twitter-like follow model, it seems that Facebook is trying to open up the network a little more and encourage people to share more content publicly. For instance, my Facebook profile is for friends and family only. I don’t share many posts publicly and this holds true for many other users. However, I’m starting to rethink that policy and might start posting more content publicly from my profile.
I would think that, with the Subscribe button and revamped Friend Lists feature that was launched Monday, Facebook is trying to kill off Twitter and Google+ by mimicking features of those services on the world’s largest social network. I don’t think that Facebook will completely kill off Twitter and Google+, as the services have different audiences. However, these features may have a significant impact on Twitter and Google+ usage going forward.

While it's hard to see where this might rival the iPhone in the mobile phone market, bar having a touchscreen, it's certainly cheaper than most of its smartphone rivals, with users getting a free phone and paying less on their contract and up to £150 less to pick up the handset SIM free.

The first thing that hits you when you pick up the Samsung Jet S8000 is just how small it is. While the dimensions will give you an idea just how dinky it is, it's very hard to describe just how diminutive this feels in the hand.

This is a double-edged sword for the phone: on the one hand, the Samsung Jet S8000 fits very well in the pocket and is a real pleasure to carry around compared to some of the other chunka-phones on offer.

We're not saying the plastic-feel of the Samsung Jet S8000 is a bad thing, as it's certainly very pocket friendly which is obviously very important for a number of people these days. It's just that a little bit of brushed aluminium or stronger materials would have probably added to the overall appeal and feel of the phone.

That said, the phone is well designed and all the buttons are within easy reach thanks to the smaller proportions. We're utterly delighted to see another 3.5mm headphone jack stuck on the top, and Samsung has managed to do this without adding a huge amount of depth to the device.

However, when using headphones plugged into the Jet S8000 it's very difficult to use the full QWERTY keyboard in landscape mode and watching video is a little tricky too, as the jack is a little too far to the left in our opinion.
Samsung's latest flagship handset, the Samsung Jet S8000, was released to massive fanfare around the world, and the General Manager for the UK said that he thought it was better than the Apple iPhone 3GS - but can a non-smartphone really compete?

The Samsung Jet S8000 is billed as 'Smarter than Smartphone', a direct comment on the fact that while it uses Samsung's proprietary feature-phone UI, the TouchWiz 2.0 OS, it still packs some mean hardware under the hood.
