Google Chrome Browser Has 200 Million Users

Google‘s 3 year-old Chrome browser just hit the 200 million user mark, CEO Larry Page announced Thursday.
The fast-growing browser had about 160 million users in May, up from 120 million in December 2010, according to eWeek, which correctly predicted Chrome would hit 200 million users in October.
Chrome’s growth had been noted elsewhere. The browser has about 15% market share and in some markets, like the UK, it has surpassed Firefox’s share to become the second most popular browser after IE. Among Mashable readers, meanwhile, Chrome is the most popular.
The huge installed base for Chrome is good news for Google, which just started rolling out its first Chromebooks in June.

Zynga’s Project Z: A Facebook-Powered Social Network for Games

Social gaming juggernaut Zynga has announced “Project Z,” a platform for playing social games and chatting with friends powered by Facebook Connect.
Project Z, also known as “Zynga Live” and “Zynga Direct,” lets users start their games on Facebook and bring them to Project Z without interruption, and vice versa. It is essentially a social network designed specifically for games and chatting about games, but one that is powered by Facebook Connect.
One key component of Project Z is that it will utilize a username system called zTags, similar to the system used by Xbox Live. Users can register their names starting Tuesday at ztag.zynga.com.
“It’s a platform for a direct relationship with consumers whether on the web, or on mobile, to give you a whole sandbox and create socialness about the games and not just within the games,” Zynga CEO Mark Pincus said of the service.

Spotify And Boxee Let You Access Streaming Music Service From Your TV

Spotify and Boxee have teamed up to let you access the social music streaming service though your TV using the media center. The Boxee Box allows you to watch many of your favorite movies and shows that are online through your TV. The Spotify integration will now allow you to listen to your favorite music through Boxee too.
There is a caveat here, in that you’ll need to be a Premium Spotify subscriber to take advantage of the Spotify Boxee app. However, if you have signed up to the $9.99 per month Premium offering, you’ll be able to enjoy on-demand access to Spotify through your TV.
This follows on from Spotify’s partnership with Western Digital, which allows owners of the manufacturer’s WD TV series of media players to access Spotify on their TVs too.
Usage of Spotify soared following its removal of invites and the announcement at the f8 conference that it was one of the launch partners for Facebook‘s music dashboard. While linking Spotify to your Facebook account meant that the songs you listen to are automatically shared on the new ticker, the music streaming service added a feature that allows you to stop sharing this information with your Facebook friends.

Google Kills Off Buzz To Focus On Google+

Google has hammered the final nail in the coffin of its previous major social project, Google Buzz. The company is closing Buzz to focus its social efforts on Google+.
Bradley Horowitz, the search giant’s vice president of product, said in a blog post that Buzz and the Buzz API will be shut down in the next few weeks. While you will not be able to add new posts to Buzz after that time, you’ll still be able to view your Buzz posts on your Google profile and download content you posted on the service using Google Takeout.
Google is closing several other products, including Code Search, The University Research Program for Google Search, Jaiku and the social features of iGoogle. The move underlines the company’s focus on Google+ as a major product. It was revealed on Thursday that the social network now has more than 40 million users less than 4 months after launching.
Buzz was launched at the start of last year, but failed to become a success. The service perhaps did not handle user privacy as well as it should have. In March, Google reached an agreement with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission — it apologized for the mistakes that were made with Buzz and is required to obtain user consent before changing how personal information is shared.

StumbleUpon Doubles User Base in 16 Months, Surpasses 20 Million Users

For a service that some say drives more traffic to websites than Facebook, StumbleUpon is not well known. However, user data that the company has released suggests that “stumbling” is on track to enter the mainstream vernacular.
In the past 16 months, the personalized discovery engine has doubled its user base. It now has more than 20 million registered users who “stumble” (click a button to load a webpage the site has picked out based on users’ preferences and behavior) more than 1 billion web pages every month.
StumbleUpon‘s growth spurt coincides with a hiring spree — it doubled its number of employees from 40 to 80 — and aggressively launched its first mobile apps. Since August 2010, the company has launched iPhone, iPad and Android apps, with help from a $17 million round of funding that closed in March.
“It’s only been a year and we’ve gone from really just being at your desk to a whole new group of people who only use it on their phones. They don’t even know there’s a website,” StumbleUpon CEO Garrett Camp told Mashable. “Next year we’re going to be as much on mobile as we are [on desktop].”
StumbleUpon’s 20 million users still don’t make it quite comparable to other popular social sites that it might be tempting to group it with. Tumblr has 31 million blogs; LinkedIn has more than 100 million users; Twitter has 200 million registered users; and Facebook has 800 million users.
But it’s gaining steam that could someday put it in that group. The next step, Camp says, will be international expansion.
“We’re just exploring it now,” he says. “Hopefully next year.”

6 Privacy Concerns Around The Latest Facebook Update [Infographic]

Facebook’s latest update takes sharing to places Facebook has never been before, with their new subscribe feature, Timeline, Open Graph apps, built-in privacy settings in every post and more.  But along with the update comes some new concerns regarding privacy.  A new infographic from consumer Internet security brand ZoneAlarm explores six new privacy concerns that have arisen as a result of the latest Facebook update.

The infographic, ‘Facebook Update Raises Red Flags’, explores what the new Timeline and Open Graph apps mean for Facebook’s 800 million active users, 86 percent of whom strongly dislike the new changes, according to a survey conducted by Sodahead.  The infographic explores the six biggest privacy issues and gives tips on how you can protect yourself.
The biggest issue that I noticed was that when I opted in to allow people to subscribe to me suddenly all of my previous posts had been made public.  To avoid this issue, go into your ‘Privacy Settings’ and under ‘Limit the Audience for Past Posts’ click on ‘Limit Old Posts’.
Check out ZoneAlarm’s six red flags and their solutions below and let us know what you think.  What’s your take on the new Facebook?  Do you like it?  Are you concerned about your privacy?

Official: Google+ Has More Than 40 Million Users

In Google‘s quarterly earnings statement, the company’s CEO Larry Page has revealed that Google+ now has more than 40 million users. It was estimated at the end of last month that the social network had 50 million users.
“We had a great quarter,” said Page. “Revenue was up 33% year on year and our quarterly revenue was just short of $10 billion. Google+ is now open to everyone and we just passed the 40 million user mark. People are flocking into Google+ at an incredible rate and we are just getting started!”
Google+ launched in limited field trial at the end of June before allowing anyone over the age of 18 to sign up without an invite last month when it went into open beta. Page confirmed in July that the social network had
10 million users within its first 2 weeks.

Zynga’s Shares To Be Listed On NASDAQ, Chooses ‘ZNGA’ As Stock Symbol

Social gaming company Zynga has decided to list its shares on the Nasdaq stock exchange under the ticker symbol “ZNGA” when it holds its IPO. The decision was revealed in an updated filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
In the filing, Zynga says, “We intend to apply to have our common stock approved for listing on the NASDAQ Global Select Market under the symbol ‘ZNGA.’” Renren and LinkedIn, both of which held their IPOs this year, were listed on the New York Stock Exchange, but tech companies are often more likely to be listed on Nasdaq.
Zynga’s suite of social games have attracted hundreds of millions of players — the company has 232 million monthly active users, with 60 million people playing its games every day. On Tuesday, the company revealed details of several upcoming games, including “CastleVille,” while it launched “Mafia Wars 2” on Monday.
Zynga filed for its IPO in July, where it claimed that it was looking to raise $1 billion. The company has reorganized its stock structure to give CEO Mark Pincus more voting power per share, but the IPO was delayed following market turmoil. There is now a 75 percent chance of the IPO taking place.

INFOGRAPHIC: How Top Nonprofits Are Using Social Networking Services

In recent years, social networking services have enabled many organizations, including nonprofits, to gain a level of visibility they may not have had before. Indeed, back in May, we brought you an infographic which shows the impact that Facebook and Twitter are having on social fundraising. It was revealed that nonprofits who use Twitter consistently beat their fundraising goals. However, how exactly are nonprofits using social networking services?
A new infographic published by Craigconnects — a website run by Craigslist founder Craig Newmark — reveals some interesting details about how the nonprofits with the highest levels of income are engaging with their supporters using social networking services. It was discovered that 92 percent of the top 50 nonprofits’ websites contain at least one social sharing button — 92 percent have Facebook sharing buttons, while 90 percent have a way to share content on Twitter.
Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) has the highest number of Facebook fans among nonprofits: 928,265. It also has the most engaged fans — they made 17,205 comments on PBS posts over the course of 2 months — and the most Twitter followers (840,653). The American Red Cross was the first nonprofit that was included in the analysis to sign up for a Twitter account.
For more stats about how nonprofits are using social networking services, check out the infographic, which you can click to enlarge.

UK Politicians Vote Against Ban On Tweeting From Parliament

Politicians in the U.K. will be allowed to continue tweeting during parliamentary debates after voting against a proposal to ban the use of Twitter in the House of Commons.
Members of Parliament can use smartphones and tablets inside the chamber as long as the devices are set to silent mode and are used with “decorum,” according to the BBC. Several politicians had argued that using smartphones and tablets during debates made those politicians appear to be detached from the discussions. However, those who supported the use of the devices said that they help MPs communicate with the public more easily and allow them to multi-task during debates.
The Commons Procedure Committee recommended that MPs should be allowed to use electronic devices other than laptops in the Parliamentary Chamber, as long as they were in silent mode and were “used in a way that does not impair decorum.” It also suggested that MPs should be allowed to refer to their devices when making speeches, rather than having to rely on paper notes.
A deputy Commons Speaker said in January that MPs were not allowed to use Twitter inside the Chamber, but on Thursday, MPs voted 206 to 63 against a motion that would have formally introduced the ban on Twitter usage.
During a debate on the issue, MP Luciana Berger said that only 2 countries in Europe have placed a ban on their politicans from tweeting during debates and that the U.K. should not become the third. Another MP, Claire Perry, said, “Tweeting helps MPs to stay informed, in touch and accountable to their constituents and to ban this would be an inexplicable step back in time.”
According to Twitter, over 40 percent of MPs use the social network. Among them are Labour leader Ed Miliband and Minister for International Development Alan Duncan.

iPhone 4s vs. Droid X 2

Retina display! 8-megapixel camera! Video calls! HDMI port! The last few days have seen lots of shouting from proponents of the hot phones of the minute, the Apple iPhone 4s and the Motorola Droid X. Which phone really delivers the best experience? We got our hands on both and tested them in seven categories: cost of ownership, storage, connection speeds, still and video image capture, display and resolution, operating system, and multitasking and media playback.

The iPhone 4s won the majority of our battles–but barely. Both phones are incredibly fast, have superb displays, and come loaded with multimedia features. Some of our tests, such as OS and media playback, come down to personal preference. On the other hand, our display, still camera, and camcorder tests clearly prove that the iPhone 4s is stronger in those categories. And the iPhone 4s won our data-speed and voice-quality tests, though they were confined to San Francisco; the results could be different in other parts of the country.
Soon, we’ll be putting the HTC EVO 4G and the Samsung Galaxy S through the same testing, so check back for those results.

onnectivity: Data Speeds and Voice Quality

The Stats: In the connectivity department, the Droid X and the iPhone 4s both come with Wi-Fi, GPS, and Bluetooth. What the Droid X can do and the iPhone 4s can’t is to act as a mobile hotspot. For an extra $20 per month, the Droid X allows you to connect up to five compatible Wi-Fi devices, such as your laptop, your iPad, or other gadgets, to Verizon’s network.
Both phones boast noise-cancellation technology, which is supposed to improve call quality by blocking sounds around you, leaving only your voice.
Testing Methodology: We tested the iPhone 4s and the Droid X in five San Francisco locations and used the same testing methodology we use for our 3G speed tests. We used the FCC-endorsed Ookla testing app on both the iPhone 4s and the Droid X to measure upload speeds and download speeds. The Ookla test sends a stream of packets from the phone to a network server and back, and then measures the average speeds at which the packets make the round trip. We ran three consecutive speed tests on each phone at each location and then picked the best upload and download speeds of the three. Our voice-call tests were more subjective; we placed calls to a common local number, listening for static, jitter, delay, dropped calls, or a failure to connect, and then assigned a score to each call.
Data Speed Winner: iPhone 4s
In our informal performance testing in San Francisco, the AT&T-connected iPhone 4s registered far faster download speeds than the Verizon-connected Droid X did. The iPhone 4s showed an average download speed of 1958 kbps (almost 2 mbps) across our five testing locations in the city. The Droid X had an average download speed of 1130 kbps–still more than enough speed for reasonably fast Web browsing and standard-definition video watching. The two new devices posted similar average upload speeds; the iPhone4 registered 434 kbps and the Droid X averaged 564 kbps. Those upload speeds are fast enough to support basic file sharing but not enough to make fat-pipe apps such as multiplayer gaming or videoconferencing run well.
Voice Quality Winner: iPhone 4s
The iPhone 4s showed an even greater advantage over the Droid X in our voice-call quality tests. In almost all the test calls we placed around the city, calls on the iPhone 4s sounded better than the Droid X. Calls sounded more natural, and were more pleasing to listen to on the other end of the line. We recorded no dropped calls on AT&T.
In test calls using the Droid X, the audio coming out of the earphone was usually clear enough, but it didn’t sound as full and pleasing as that coming out of the iPhone 4s. On the other end, I’m told, my voice sounded loud enough, but not as dynamic and even a bit shrill. We also noted some minor static on some calls, as well as a warbling sound in other calls. We recorded only one dropped call using the Droid X.
Obviously, you can’t generalize too much from these tests. We were able to test in only one city, and testing over wireless networks is inherently unpredictable–weather and network traffic can affect the results in unknown ways.

Still Camera

The Specs: The iPhone 4s sports a 5-megapixel camera sensor with an LED flash, which is a nice upgrade from the iPhone 3GS’s 3-megapixel camera with no flash. The camera supports tap-to-focus in shooting mode, as well as photo geotagging.
On paper, the Droid X’s camera seems a bit stronger. It has an 8-megapixel display with a dual-LED flash. The Droid X offers no tap-to-focus, but it does have a face-detection feature that will automatically focus on a (human) subject. In addition to an Auto mode, the Droid X has a handful of basic scene modes that you can adjust based on the shooting environment: Landscape, Portrait, Macro, Sports, Steady Shot, Sunset, and Night Portrait.
Testing Methodology: PCWorld’s testing methodology for the iPhone 4 and Droid X cameras was a truncated version of our regular testing methodology for point-and-shoot cameras. We affixed each phone to a tripod and shot two images with the flash turned off:
1. One still-life scene with a color chart and delightful random objects to rate exposure quality and color accuracy.
2. A target chart and printed text to evaluate sharpness and distortion levels.

Steve Jobs’ Death Garners 2.5 Million Tweets, Over 13,000 Blog Posts

Steve Jobs was the king of technology and he is responsible for advancements that completely revolutionized the way we interact with technology and live our day-to-day lives. It’s not surprising that users would take to technology to mourn after the news of his passing – particularly through Twitter, where news spreads faster than reporters can report on it.

Sysomos gathered data about just how much people were tweeting, blogging and posting about Jobs’ death and the numbers are enormous. At 8:30 p.m. EDT on Wednesday there were 249,042 tweets sent out that mentioned the Apple founder after the news of his passing went public. That number rose to a shocking 2.5 million in 12 hours. By 8:30 a.m. EDT on Thursday, feeds were inundated with tweets about the former CEO.

It’s not just Twitter that was buzzing with the sad news; pretty much every social media outlet was affected. By 9:30 p.m. EDT on Wednesday night, there were 1,905 blog posts, 3,836 online news articles, 1,483 message board posts and more than 579,400 tweets. The numbers only rose from there. Along with the 2.5 million tweets that piled up overnight, by 8:30 a.m. EDT on Thursday morning there were 13,284 blog posts, 25,704 message board posts and 30,905 news mentions.

Keywords surrounding Jobs’ death ranged from sadness to praise and mentions of his innovations. On Wednesday night when the news of the iPhone 4S launch was still circling around various blogs and news sources, words like Apple, iPhone, smartphone, Macintosh and iPod were still some of the most prevalent terms. It was clear that it was too early for the news to completely impact all fronts, though like usual, Twitter was ahead of the game.

By 9:30 a.m. EDT on Thursday morning, keywords regarding technology were amassed with words like condolence, saddened and cancer. It’s unsurprising that the focus would shift towards sadness, respect and facts about his death rather than technology as the news spread further and further through different parts of the world.

If you weren’t convinced that Jobs’ impact on technology extended globally, a heat chart outlines the areas of the world that buzzed with social media mentions of the visionary. As you can see, while the U.S. has the largest volume of mentions, there are mentions spread out across the globe.

On Friday, YouTube has decided to take their video rental service overseas and has added over 1,000 feature-length films from Hollywood and British studios for users in the U.K.

Cheaper version of iPhone 4 to be announced tomorrow

Gizmodo reports that procured images of what is most likely a new iPhone, a cheaper version of iPhone 4, to be announced on Tuesday along with iPhone 4S.
Gizmodo reports:
Our Brazilian brothers, Gizmodo.com.br, got their hot little hands on a few photos of one a new iPhone, to be announced next week. How? Well, there’s a Foxconn factory in Brazil, and Pedro & co got one of their men inside.

The device is codenamed ‘N90A’ and is not the iPhone 4S (codenamed ‘N94). Most of images don’t say any special stuff. But when you see the last one, a picture of a Foxconn Brazil quality control form has a different model number, N90A.”
The site also reports that the device has some issues with the camera lenses and hence will not hit the stores soon.
